Medical Coverage
Overview
GitLab team members are covered through Japan’s Social Insurance system, managed by the National Health Insurance Association (Kyokai Kenpo). This provides comprehensive medical coverage from day one.
Eligibility
- All GitLab GK (Japan) team members
- Coverage effective from hire date
Key Features
Coverage includes hospital care, outpatient services, prescription medications, and specialist treatments with standardized 30% co-payments.
How to Access Your Benefits
- Receive Your Insurance Card: Provided during onboarding
- Visit Healthcare Providers: Present your card at participating facilities
- Pay Co-payments: 30% at time of service

Annual Health Check-Up
Overview
You’re entitled to a comprehensive annual health check-up through your Social Insurance benefits.
Eligibility
- All team members covered by Kyokai Kenpo
- Available annually
Key Features
Choose designated Kyokai Kenpo hospitals or your preferred facility. GitLab reimburses up to ¥15,000 annually.
How to Access
- Schedule: Book at any designated or preferred facility
- Complete: Attend your health screening
- Submit: Expense through Navan (invoice only, no medical data)

Financial Security Benefits
Employee Pension System
Overview
Automatic enrollment in Japan’s Employee Pension system provides retirement income from age 60.
Eligibility
- All team members registered for Social Insurance
- Requires 25+ years of contributions for full benefits
Key Features
Benefits calculated using salary history and contribution period. Contributions automatically deducted from salary.
Unemployment Insurance (Koyou Hoken)
Overview
Government-managed unemployment insurance supports all team members with comprehensive benefits during job transitions.
Eligibility
- Working at least 20 hours per week
- Expected employment of 31+ days
- Includes international team members
Key Features
Covers unemployment benefits, childcare leave allowance, nursing care leave allowance, and education/training support.
Family & Life Transition Support
Maternity Leave & Benefits
Overview
Take 14 weeks of protected maternity leave with two-thirds of your base salary through government allowance.
Eligibility
- All pregnant GitLab GK team members
- Available regardless of employment length
Key Features
Leave starts 6 weeks before due date. Government provides 2/3 salary during entire leave period.
How to Access
- Plan: Leave begins 6 weeks before delivery
- Apply: Submit government allowance application
- Coordinate: Work with manager and People Operations
Important Information
- May coordinate with GitLab Parental Leave if eligible
Parental Leave (Child Care Leave)
Overview
Take up to one year of protected leave with substantial government financial support.
Eligibility
- Available until child’s first birthday
- Fixed-term employees need one year employment
- Must commit to return to work
Key Features
Receive 67% salary (first 6 months), 50% thereafter. Both parents can take leave.
How to Access
- Plan: Starts after maternity leave (mothers) or from birth (fathers)
- Apply: Submit allowance application
- Coordinate: Arrange role coverage
Important Information
- May coordinate with GitLab Parental Leave if eligible
Additional Family Support
Child Nursing Care Leave: Up to 5 days (1 child) or 10 days (2+ children). Runs with GitLab PTO.
Family Care Leave: Up to 10 days annually for sick/injured family members. Runs with GitLab PTO.
Nursing Care Leave: Up to 93 days for family member nursing care, with potential government allowance.
Time Off & Leave Policies
Annual/Vacation Leave
Overview
Guaranteed annual leave starting at 10 days after six months, increasing to maximum 20 days.
Key Features
Leave increases with tenure. Unused leave carries over up to two years.
How to Access
- Track: Monitor through Workday
- Request: Submit as “Paid Time Off” in Workday
Important Information
- No payment for unused leave upon termination
Sick Leave
Overview
Multiple support layers including job protection and income replacement through Japan’s Health Insurance Scheme.
Key Features
- First 25 working days administered under GitLab’s Sick Time policy
- Additional paid time can be administered under:
- Accrued vacation (optional)
- 60% salary from Japan’s government Health Insurance Scheme
- Per GitLab’s work rules, team members with less than 5 years of service are entitled to 3 months of job protected leave
How to Access
- Report: Mark “Out Sick” in Workday
- Extended Leave: For 5+ days, follow Communicating Illness-Related Leave process
- Sick Leaves beyond 25 working days: Team members to apply here
Other Protected Leave
Menstrual Leave: Unpaid leave when menstruation significantly impacts work ability.
Civil Rights Leave: Unpaid time for voting, jury service, and other civil duties.
