Feature Readiness

Feature Readiness group within Developer Experience sub-department

Mission

The Feature Readiness team empowers GitLab’s development teams to deliver high-quality, production-ready features through comprehensive assessment frameworks and actionable quality insights. We provide the tools, processes, and visibility needed to ensure features meet GitLab’s platform readiness standards before reaching our customers.

Vision

Establish feature readiness as a foundational component of GitLab’s DevEx platform that provides a single, easily discoverable entry point to platform readiness requirements. Through this platform, every engineer will confidently ship high-quality features with rapid feedback on production readiness, feature quality, and compliance—strengthening cross-department alignment and standardizing development practices to enable more consistent and efficient feature delivery across all GitLab platform offerings.

What We Do

Quality Insights

We develop and maintain an analytics dashboard that provides continuous visibility into feature quality health through measurable criteria across multiple categories including Test Health, Security, Performance, Infrastructure, and User Impact. Our Quality Insights app serves as both a measurement tool and a quality benchmark, helping teams make data-driven decisions to improve feature quality.

Framework for Platform Readiness Enablement Process (PREP)

We provide automated, AI assisted assessment capabilities that evaluate features against requirements in multiple categories across all development stages, integrated directly into the development workflow. Our systems ensure every feature meets platform expectations across the SDLC, reducing manual overhead while maintaining comprehensive quality checks.

Roadmap

Immediate (FY26-Q3)

For the PREP process, our immediate focus is on establishing automated discovery capabilities for Platform Readiness Enablement Process (PREP) process:

  1. Feature Epic Discovery System: Ensure consistency in feature epic labeling to assist in identifying feature epics requiring readiness assessments
  2. Framework Awareness & Adoption: Ensure new and existing work-in-progress features are properly onboarded into the FRA process

At the same time we are investigating options for automating the PREP process. Options we are investigating are:

  • Using Duo Agent Platform (DAP) for initiating, coordinating and completing the assessments
  • Using a custom tool that utilizes an LLM (such as Claude) along with GitLab’s official MCP server to initiate, drive and complete the assessments.

For the Quality insights, the team is focused on introducing Quarantine Tests metric in the Test Health vertical.

How we work

Meetings and Scheduled Calls

Our preference is to work asynchronously, within our projects issues trackers.

The team does have a set of regular synchronous calls:

  • Feature Readiness Team meeting
  • 1-1s between the Individual Contributors and Engineering Manager

Project Management

The majority of our project management process is described at the Platforms level and is shared between all Infrastructure Platform teams.

For more information on current projects, refer to parent epic.
