DesignOps

DesignOps is the operational core of Upstream Studios. We shape the conditions that help design work happen well across GitLab: the systems, practices, tooling, documentation, and shared context that let teams do ambitious work without losing coherence, quality, or momentum.

Overview

DesignOps is the team responsible for how design work operates across Upstream Studios. We sit at the intersection of process, people, tools, and delivery so teams can stay focused on high-value creative work instead of losing time to operational drag. Designers, researchers, writers, and brand practitioners own the output. We own the conditions that help that output happen well.

Today, DesignOps supports Upstream Studios across Product, Marketing, and Brand, and is building toward a mature function that supports how designers onboard, grow, collaborate, and scale their impact across the organization.

Mission

We turn design demand into an organized, trackable, scalable operating system. Through process design, tooling, documentation, metrics, and cross-functional coordination, we translate demand into systems, workflows, visibility, and the information leadership needs to decide, so Upstream Studios can work with greater clarity, consistency, and leverage.

What we do

  • Build and continuously improve the operational systems that run design work day to day, intake, routing, workflows, tooling, documentation, and team rituals, automating wherever a system can do the job instead of a person.
  • Catch emerging demand and gaps early, before they become urgent requests, through systems built to surface them.
  • Support onboarding and enablement so people have the context, access, and structure they need to contribute quickly and effectively.
  • Create operational visibility through metrics, reporting, and structured data that help leadership understand capacity, workload, and emerging patterns over time.
  • Maintain the shared infrastructure, intake paths, and context systems that keep design, product, brand, and marketing aligned without manual coordination.

How we work

The DesignOps team is grounded in a few simple operating principles that reflect both the Design Strategy materials and the role definition for DesignOps at GitLab.

  • How design works is our work. What design ships is theirs.
  • We work in the open and keep our documentation useful, current, and reflective of how work actually happens.
  • Small changes compound, so we improve systems iteratively instead of waiting for a perfect future-state solution.
  • Decisions have owners, and discussion has limits. We aim for clarity, momentum, and accountable follow-through.
  • We build leverage, not bureaucracy. The goal is reducing coordination overhead so designers can spend more time on strategic and creative value.

Current areas of focus

As the team takes shape, several themes are already emerging as meaningful areas of DesignOps investment.

  • Smarter intake and automation that improve request quality, reduce manual triage, and create cleaner structured data at the point of request.
  • Reporting and operational intelligence that make workload, bandwidth, seasonality, and forecasting easier to understand and act on.
  • Tooling and asset infrastructure improvements, including better systems for search, metadata, self-service, and long-term operational hygiene.
